Locations:Saluda Shoals ParkNormal Work Schedule:Hours are 37.5 - 40hrs per week. Schedule includes some weekends; hours may alternate contingent upon business needs.

Under regular supervision, performs routine custodial work in the maintenance of Recreation Commission facilities and grounds, ensuring a safe, pleasant environment for staff and the public. Performs related duties as required.  Reports to the assigned departmental supervisor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs general custodial work as required in the maintenance of Recreation Commission facilities, including but not limited to buffing, polishing, stripping and refinishing floors; vacuuming and cleaning carpets; sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms; dusting and polishing office furniture and various other surfaces; removing trash and washing trash cans; etc.

Stocks restrooms with supplies.

Arranges activity rooms for classes and meetings as instructed; moves and rearranges furniture and equipment as needed.

Maintains assigned equipment.

Reports safety and maintenance conditions to supervisor.

Refers to policy and procedure manuals, equipment manuals, chemical manuals, etc.

Operates a variety of maintenance equipment such as a vacuum cleaner, floor buffer, power blower, air compressor, handicap lift operator, etc.

Utilizes various clerical, cleaning and maintenance supplies.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, staff of other departments, and the general public.

 

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Provides assistance to staff as requested; assists contractors with facility and grounds maintenance.

May sweep and clean walkways and picnic shelters.

Performs related duties as required.

 

                                                                              

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by six months of general custodial or building maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which involves the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 20 pounds), and occasionally heavier items (up to 50 pounds).

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communications:  Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes receiving direction and instruction from supervisor.

Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policies and procedures, equipment manuals, chemical mix instructions, etc. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Requires the ability learn and understand principles and techniques; to make routine independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and the general public.

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide and to determine time.  Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using custodial and maintenance machinery.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, hand tools, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. Worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree.

Physical Communications:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing:  perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

 

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Knowledge of Job:  Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Recreation Commission as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Custodian. Has knowledge of the techniques, equipment, tools, and materials used in custodial and facilities maintenance work. Is able to follow oral and written instructions. Is able to follow safety and sanitation rules and regulations. Has knowledge of how to operate a variety of equipment and machines used in custodial maintenance. Is able to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Is able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Is able to prepare simple forms and records. Is able to read technical materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Has knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Has knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Is able to work effectively despite occasional exposure to strong odors, toxic agents / chemicals, wetness, dusts, electric currents, machinery hazards.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.  Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.  Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
