Letter from the Executive Director

Parks are a tangible reflection of the quality of life in a community. They provide identity for citizens and are a major factor in the perception of quality of life in a given community. Parks and recreation services are often cited as one of the most important factors in communities voted to be most livable.

Dear Friends,

The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) takes great pride and pleasure in serving our community. The Commission and staff continually strive to provide the best facilities and programs we can, all with the hope to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of this district. Be it through summer camps, theater programs, sporting events, senior meal services, or one of our other great programs and activities, we do our best to build intrinsic value in our community.

ICRC's four parks - Seven Oaks Park, Crooked Creek Park, Saluda Shoals Park, and Melvin Park - are recognized as some of the best in the region and state. Our Parks offer a variety of passive and active recreational opportunities in beautiful, clean, well-maintained settings. We are very proud of these great facilities and the programs they offer. We believe you should be too! I would encourage everyone to look through our activity guide and take time to discover one of our great parks.

In addition, I invite you to explore the many different ways to give back to this community. Volunteering with ICRC is a direct way to leave a lasting impression on the lives of others, whether you are an athletic coach, delivering meals on wheels, becoming a nature interpreter, or assisting with our Therapeutic Recreation soccer program. There are numerous opportunities to choose from and all have the potential to change someone's life. It always amazes me how much of an impact one person can have when they volunteer.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about our Parks and programs. I can be reached at or (803) 772-1228 and am always happy to speak with those interested in parks and recreation!

Hope to see you soon in one of our Parks!

Best regards,

Mark A. Smyers
