Under regular supervision, assists in coordinating and implementing a comprehensive program of recreation and leisure programs, activities, services, and events that promote a lifestyle of wellness and physical activity for citizens of all ages, interests, and abilities. Work involves assisting with facility supervision and program scheduling. Performs related administrative and professional work as required. Reports to the Recreation Coordinator II - Athletics or designee.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating recreation and leisure events, programs, activities, camps, and services in assigned program areas.
May supervise full- and/or part-time employees, as well as contracted instructors/officials, and volunteers as assigned.
Schedule and supervise facility usage for agency activities and public use.
Takes appropriate steps to help ensure the safety of all program participants.
Assists marketing division personnel with the promotion of assigned programs.
Assists Athletic Director with various programs and projects as requested.
Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints regarding Park programs and activities.
Represents the Park to other agencies, organizations and the public.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or processes a variety of documents, including but not limited to program schedules, check and refund requests, work orders, program registrations, charts, rosters, and various other records, reports, memos and correspondence.
Refers to the policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, professional manuals, equipment manuals, safety manuals, game rule handbooks, etc.
Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, two-way radio, etc.
Uses clerical supplies, recreation / sports equipment, safety gear, various hand and power tools, first aid supplies.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other department personnel, civic / community organizations, school personnel, vendors, contractors, instructors, volunteers, program participants, teachers, parents, and the general public.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs general administrative / clerical duties as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering computer data, attending meetings, answering the telephone, etc.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, physical education, leisure service, or related field supplemented by one to two years of recreation programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (up to 20 pounds), and occasionally heavier objects and materials (up to 50 pounds).
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communications: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor and giving instructions to subordinates or volunteers.
Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, equipment manuals, schedules, rules and regulations, etc. Requires the ability to prepare reports, records, correspondence, schedules, program information, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic or schedule form. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, and visually read various information.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office and special machinery; to swim with skill; to operate motor vehicles.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, tools, recreation / sports equipment, safety gear, etc. Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree and to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Programming Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Recreation Coordinator I. Has knowledge of the organization of the Department and of related departments and agencies. Has knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to help plan and develop daily, short- and long-term goals related to the Park, including programs, services, events, and activities. Has knowledge of individual and team sports, wellness / fitness, leisure programming, senior programming, and services. Has knowledge of how to make public presentations and is skilled in teaching students of all ages. Is able to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and events, recommending and implementing changes as appropriate.
