Reimagining the Environmental Education Center
Originally built in 2001, the Environmental Education Center at Saluda Shoals Park has long been a cornerstone for learning and community connection. As the Park’s vision continues to grow, the Center must evolve to better serve today’s visitors and future generations.
To renew and expand this essential facility, the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC), in partnership with the Saluda Shoals Foundation, is launching a multi-phase renovation and expansion effort. Phase One begins in January 2026 and will focus on critical upgrades, including:
- An expanded outdoor deck designed to enhance educational programs, gatherings, and special events
- New ADA-accessible restrooms to improve comfort, accessibility, and inclusivity for all visitors
A Vision for What’s Next
Building on these initial improvements, the Saluda Shoals Foundation is preparing a capital campaign to support Phases Two and Three of the project. These future phases will transform the Environmental Education Center into a vibrant Welcome Center along the Saluda Shoals Riverwalk—serving as the primary point of arrival and connection for park visitors.
This reimagined space will offer:
Central Experience Point
A unified arrival and orientation hub connecting guests to all park amenities and activities.
Community & Gathering
A welcoming place for families, visitors, partners, and donors to come together.
Discovery
Dedicated spaces for environmental education, outdoor adventure, and lifelong engagement with nature.
Transformational Impact
A strategic investment that enhances quality of life, supports tourism, and strengthens regional vitality.
A Lasting Legacy
An opportunity for donors to help create a visible, enduring asset that will benefit the community for decades to come.
